Choosing an Office document library for .NET is a consequential decision. It affects deployment, licensing, team workflow, and how easily you can debug document issues in production. The most useful comparison is not brand-versus-brand marketing; it is understanding what OfficeIMO does well, where proprietary suites tend to go further, and how much that extra breadth is worth to your team.

The Most Honest Way to Compare
Instead of asking "which library wins everywhere?", ask these questions:
- Do we need open-source licensing and source visibility?
- Do we need PowerShell-first automation?
- Which modern and legacy format operations must be native, editable, visually faithful, or lossless?
- Is our deployment environment sensitive to package size, trimming, or container behavior?
- Do we need vendor support more than we need source access?
If source access, modular deployment, PowerShell, and explicit compatibility policy matter more, OfficeIMO is often the right place to start. If formal vendor accountability or a specialist format/rendering workload dominates, a proprietary suite may still be the better organizational fit.
Recommendation
Start with the smallest thing that satisfies the job. For many report-generation, document-assembly, Markdown, CSV, and script-driven workflows, OfficeIMO is already enough and keeps the operational model simple. If you later discover that a specific workload needs broader format support, stricter rendering fidelity, or commercial support, you can bring in a proprietary library just for that slice instead of making it the default for everything.
